Goldfish Plushie for Kitty

Woke up too early this morning. Was browsing through the web watching you tube videos of crafty stuff and then kitty cats - my two favorite things. Not sure what sparked my interest to suddenly make my kitty cat a catnip toy - but I decided, hey I want to make him a goldfish with lots of catnip stuffed inside of it (he loves mega doses of catnip). I looked at some cotton material that I had (yellow with little flowers) and thought how thin this was and perhaps he needed something more substantial - something he can sink his claws and teeth into (although he usually licks the thing to death - lol). So here is the final product:

And here is kitty enjoying his new catnip plushie. :)

Feline Diabetes

My kitty was diagnosed with feline diabetes back in 2001. With the help of the Feline Diabetes website / boards and my awesome vet who agreed with many of the suggestions from this site, I was able to regulate my kitty and he is now living a healthy life!

Please visit the Feline Diabetes site if you need help with managing your kitty's diabetes and also be sure to make a donation to help keep the site up and running. It is a great resource and has given me much help and information that I could not find anywhere else.

For info on supporting the site through donations:

Cat diabetes is a treatable, manageable condition. You can maintain your sanity and your cat's health, all on a reasonable budget.

What is Feline Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus, or "sugar" diabetes, is a common disorder in cats and dogs, caused by the inability of the hormone insulin to properly balance blood sugar (glucose) levels.

Glucose is processed by the body into energy. After food is digested, glucose enters the blood stream -- in a healthy body, insulin is then secreted signaling the cells to begin the process of converting the sugars into useable energy. As more food is consumed, more insulin is secreted, and the needed glucose is consumed. The pancreas secretes small amounts of insulin -- just enough to ensure blood glucose levels don't rise too high (hyperglycemia) or fall dangerously low (hypoglycemia).

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, and type 2 when the body's cells don't respond well to insulin. Both result in high blood sugar levels because the body is unable to process the available glucose. In the early stages, diabetics may gain weight as appetites increase and their insulin levels rise and fall. However, in spite of maintaining a good appetite, diabetics ultimately lose weight since the body isn't able to process sugars into energy. Essentially, diabetics begin to starve to death.

Excessive urination is a classic sign of diabetes in pets, and is likely what led to your diagnosis. Diabetic pets that develop hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) will begin passing the excess sugar into their urine (glucosuria). As glucose builds in the urine, the body responds by trying to flush the excess from the kidneys through urination. The condition of excess urination (polyuria, or PU), accompanied by excessive thirst (polydipsia, or PD), are classic signs of diabetes in pets. As you regulate your pet's diabetes, the PU/PD will become controlled as well.

Although affecting cats of any breed, sex, or age, diabetes mellitus most often occurs in older, obese individuals; males are more commonly afflicted than females. The exact cause of the disease in cats is not known, although genetics, obesity, pancreatic disease, hormonal imbalances, and certain medications are all possible factors.

Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Our department decided to have a pumpkin decorating contest. There were six designated teams. They provided us with one big pumpkin and some decorations. Each team was requested to decorate their pumpkins in a way they believe exemplifies one of our company's core values – Respect; Quality, Integrity, Customers, Teamwork, and Performance. We were allowed to add anything we wanted - so we were only limited by our own imagination and creativity.
After our team stopped complaining about having to do something else on top of all the work we had to do – and someone finally volunteered to be the team leader - our group threw out a bunch of ideas. We all really liked the idea of doing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (that was my idea!). The Seven Dwarfs represented teamwork, integrity, and performance. The seven individual characters – Happy, Sleepy, Doc, Bashful, Sneezy, Grumpy and Dopy – are a true team, always going off to work each morning whistling a happy tune. They embed the concept of teamwork and cooperation illustrating how different talents and personalities can be brought together to accomplish shared goals.
We decided to carve out Snow White on the large pumpkin we were given and paint the faces of the dwarfs on small pumpkins that we bought. So many of the people on our team were afraid to create these because they felt they had no artistic talent and would not be able to draw or paint. We booked a meeting room to do our project and everyone took a small pumpkin and started drawing. Many of our team members surprised themselves of just how well their pumpkin came out! And we just had so much fun decorating the little guys!
We placed our pumpkins on display and everyone in our building was asked to vote for their favorite. They voted by dropping change into a bucket by each team's display - all the way up to $1 bills. Anything above a $1 was not allowed – but you could drop several $1 bills. This was to prevent each group from voting for their own pumpkin by dropping in large bills. The monies collected were going to be donated to the The Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The pumpkin that collected the most money was the winner. There was so much excitement around the whole event!  We collectively raised over $300 and our company matched the donations!
And the winner is …. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!!!!!!
